NICE National Institute for Health and Care Excellence – Level 5 Operations/Departmental Manager Apprenticeship Programme Case Study

The brief

NICE – National Institute for Health and Care Excellence Provide guidance, advice, quality standards and information services for health, public health and social care.

We won a tender to design, develop and deliver the Level 5 Operations/Departmental Manager Apprenticeship Programme for NICE, to improve leadership and management capabilities within the organisation, to enable people to lead in new and improved ways.

What we did

Aspire Development has been working in partnership with NICE to deliver Level 5 Operations/Departmental Manager Apprenticeship Programme since 2019. The apprenticeship has been structured to provide individuals with skills, knowledge, strategies and tools to make a positive difference to their performance, their team’s performance, their working relationships and their results.

2.5 years on since we won the contract, we have completed the first cohort, we are well underway with cohort 2 and have plans for a 3rd cohort in 2022. We spoke to Sarah Woodhead, Learning & Development Practitioner at NICE, to find out her perspective on how our apprenticeship programmes are benefiting the organisation.

Sarah said ‘It’s been a pleasure working with Sally Turgoose and Liz O’Connell from Aspire Development over the years. They have been extremely flexible and worked with us to deliver the apprenticeship programmes through an extremely difficult time for many people.’

Sarah continued ‘it was the first time we have delivered leadership and management development via an apprenticeship route. The ongoing support through the workshops, one-to-one coaching and self-reflection has had a significant impact on the confidence and capabilities of our managers. All delegates who have attended the programmes have taken on additional responsibility and over 50% of the participants have been promoted because of the programme. Sally and Liz have enabled our learners to achieve excellent results from attending the apprenticeship programme and we are really pleased with the outcome’.

Sally Turgoose Aspire Developments Learning and Development Director, said “It has been a real privilege to work with NICE and their management apprentices as they have tackled important health and social care challenges over the last 2 years. They have continued to invest in their apprentices and provided support to ensure they are being given the opportunity to learn and  implement their new knowledge, skills and behaviours in the workplace.”

Results

Sally was invited to attend the NICE – National Institute for Health and Care Excellence conference.

Sally was there to award certificates to her Level 5 Apprentices who had achieved the Operations/Departmental Manager Apprenticeship qualification. All 14 Level 5 Apprentices achieved the Operations/Departmental Manager Apprenticeship qualification with a Distinction! ⭐ This is an excellent achievement and has set the bar high for Cohort 2.

We spoke to one of the Line Managers at NICE and they were pleased with the development their manager had made whilst on the apprenticeship programme. They said, “I feel she has learnt vital skills whilst on the apprenticeship and she uses the outputs from toolkits, workshops and online learning provided to implement back into the workplace. She shows greater signs of confidence now and is able to lead more effectively.”

We also spoke to a learner who wanted to share how the programme had helped them within their role at NICE. He said, “The skills I learnt on the programme helped me align my team and make sure we were all on the same page. Tools like SWOT analysis allowed me to think about developing new processes and plan ahead for the future of my team and NICE.”
