nmcn - Level 5 Apprenticeship Programme

Chris Palmer, a Project Manager, is responsible for the delivery of multiple design and build construction projects at NMCNomenca. Wanting to extend his leadership skills and continue with his career development and progression, he enrolled onto the Level 5 Operations/Departmental Manager Apprenticeship.

Speaking of why the apprenticeship programme works for him, Chris said “I have completed an ILM 3 course previously, which was not an apprenticeship. I found this was very assignment driven. The apprenticeship programme is better suited to me as I can apply learnings into my day job and collect evidence which is used towards the assignments”.

Discussing how the programme has improved his capabilities and performance, he commented “I am actively making changes to my behaviours. I am now directing my approach towards leadership rather than management as much as my role will allow”.

“In the workshops we have looked at management tools which have been a great help, as I have been able to apply these directly into my role, for example the GROW model” which focuses on the goal, the reality, the options and the way forward.

Chris has also found that the skills and knowledge gained from the programme have had a positive impact on his team and their performance. He said “I have actively applied the techniques and models from the programme with my team during performance management meetings. My team now have clear and defined individual objectives, and members of my team are actively working on their own personal development”.

“My team 1-2-1 meetings are more structured now, and I have the confidence that my team feel they are beneficial”. Continuing, he added “I have empowered my lead designer to facilitate his own meetings with the team to improve the quality of our designs and reduce rework, and we are seeing the benefits of this already”.

Concluding, Chris said “The apprenticeship is a key part of my development into Senior Management. I am now being selected for high level activities within the business away from my day job which are great opportunities for me to network across the NM Group”.
