North East Leadership Academy (NELA) – Coaching and Mentoring

The brief

Aspire is the main provider of Coaching and Mentoring training for the NELA and our role is to equip clinical and non-clinical employees and managers at all levels with the necessary skills, knowledge and behaviours to respond to and implement a coaching and mentoring culture in the NHS across the North East of England (including North Cumbria as it forms part of the Northumbria NHS Healthcare Foundation Trust).

To demonstrate our experience in developing a coaching and mentoring culture within the NELA we have provided the list of programmes we deliver and who the audience is of the programme:

What we did

Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) Level 5 Coaching and Mentoring Programme

Expected delegates come on the programme from a range of professional disciplines, and from middle to senior management levels. Some might have a functional responsibility for coaching (e.g. OD Managers) and others might require coaching skills or accreditation to perform part of their role (e.g. medical education, supervision of junior doctors).

Coaching Fundamentals

Coaching Fundamentals is aimed at a management audience, for clinical and non-clinical managers of all levels who want to adopt a coaching style within their leadership of people. The Coaching Fundamentals programme is also suitable for managerial level colleagues who want to use a coaching style to get the best out of working relationships, such as meetings or project groups.

Coaching for Performance

The Coaching for Performance programme is aimed at all line-managers at all levels and in both clinical and non-clinical areas. It would also be applicable to HR team members whose role it is to support managers to maximise performance of their staff.

Coach CPD

The primary audience for CPD is NELA coaches who have committed to keep their skills and knowledge up to date as a registered Coach, and in order to comply with European Mentoring and Coaching Council Standards and the NELA Framework for Coaching. We also encourage anyone who has a keen interest in coaching to attend CPD sessions to encourage the spread of a coaching culture.

Group Coach Supervision

The audience for Group Supervision is practicing NELA coaches who have committed to keep their skills and knowledge up to date as a registered Coach, and in order to comply with European Mentoring and Coaching Council Standards and the NELA Framework for Coaching.

HR Assessment Centres

The HR Assessment Centres were used to rigorously assess HR professionals at mid-level and senior level with the purpose of identifying talent for future development opportunities. There were 12 to 14 mid-level candidates and 12 to 14 senior candidates who took part in the process, with each group’s Assessment Centre lasting two days.

Results

Aspire are very professional but will also adapt their delivery to meet customer needs and expectations. Aspire work very closely with the NELA to design the Programmes and workshops. They take part in project meeting and conference calls with the business to ensure content of programmes and workshops are pitched at the right level and tailored to individual’s needs.

Aspire provide high quality training and materials for our managers, and particularly excel at making the learning relevant to the business environment of the groups they work with.
