Aspire Development’s Top Tips for a Happier Workplace

 

During my workshop for First Line Managers on Leading People and Teams, we had a great discussion on ‘how to create a happier workplace’. This is timely in light of rising costs, increased workloads and fewer resources.

It can feel disheartening when many of the messages that we receive are negative, and especially hard when the working environment or the nature of work is also challenging. Reminders of what is going wrong or what needs to be better can be draining and results in low morale for ourselves and the team.   It was refreshing to discuss what a manager can do to create a happier workplace and I thought I’d share our top three tips.

 

It is good to share

Knowing that others have the same or similar struggles can help lighten the load.  Talking to others about problems will offer insights and advice to help deal with the situation or gain a different perspective.

Get to know my team

What is it that they like about working here?  What’s important to them about work?  Is it opportunities for development, career progression or more about doing a good job and making a difference?   Having the conversation will help them feel valued!

Talk about our achievements

Targets and measures are a great way to keep the focus on performance and results, but can lose impact over time.  Translating the results into success stories, how we’ve made a difference to our customers or colleagues, is a powerful reminder of the difference our work makes to others.
